Missing Java File Type Association - When attempting to install or launch Voyant, nothing appears to happen or I receive an "Open with" prompt

Problem:

I try to install Voyant by clicking 'Download Voyant Adviser' on the website, and nothing appears to happen. Or, alternatively, a window pops-up prompting me to "Open With" - the machine then offers only inappropriate applications, such as Internet Explorer, or another browser, with which to open the JNLP file.

Issue:

Windows is not making the file type association between Java (Java Web Start really) and our InstallVoyant.jnlp file.

Solution:

Although it appeared that nothing was happening, the user's machine will have downloaded the InstallVoyant.JNLP file. As such, the course of action, in these cases, is (1) to verify that Java has, in fact, been installed on the user's machine, then (2) to find the downloaded JNLP file - when you do find the downloaded file, it will often turn out that the user has quite a number of JNLP files, because they kept clicking, when nothing seemed to be happening.

The downloaded JNLP file can be located either via the browser, or by going to 'This PC', via the Start Menu, or search bar.

Below are instructions for Internet Explorer and Firefox. How you download and opt to 'Save File' and 'Open With' works a bit differently in the two browsers. The latter half of the respective instructions are duplicated, since, at that point, you are working in the Windows Operating System, rather than the browser.

NOTE for Windows 8: There is a similar issue but a different solution for the new Windows 8 system. If you have issues with the jnlp filetype association in Windows 8, we recommend that the user reinstall Java, even if the Java website detects that Java is already installed. There is no need to uninstall Java beforehand.

Internet Explorer

Select the 'Tools' option (i.e the small cog icon), top-right of the browser, then 'View Downloads':

If the Java Web Start Launcher isn’t already shown as one of the suggested programmes, which it probably won’t be...

…select 'Browse' to locate Java Web Start and associate it with the .jnlp file type.

You will navigate to the latest "javaws.exe" (Java Webstart executable), at the location provided below. If you have trouble locating it, run a search for javaws.

Javaws.exe will typically be found in the following location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre8\bin.

NB: In some cases, Java will be found in the Program Files (x86) directory, whereas in other versions it will be in the regular Program Files directory.

Select the javaws.exe and click Open. This will create the file type association, open, cache and hopefully launch Voyant. If this doesn’t work, you may try uninstalling and reinstalling Java.

Firefox

To view the downloads, click the "All Files Have Finished Downloading" link bottom-right...

...or click the download arrow, top-right, right-click on the InstallVoyant.jnlp file and select Open Containing Folder.

In the installs directory, right-click on the InstallVoyant.jnlp and select Open With.

If the Java Web Start Launcher isn’t already shown as the recommended program, which it probably won’t be, hence the problem…

…select Browse to locate Java Web Start and associate it with the .jnlp file type.

You will search for the latest javaws.exe (Java Webstart executable). If you have trouble locating it, run a search for javaws.

Note that in some versions of Windows it may be located in the Program Files (x86) directory whereas in other versions it will be in the regular Program Files directory – e.g. C:\Program Files\Java\jre8\bin.

Select the javaws.exe and click Open. This will create the file type association, open, cache and hopefully launch Voyant. If this doesn’t work, you may try uninstalling and reinstalling Java.
