Adding or restoring a desktop shortcut to Voyant Adviser

Q. I have loaded Voyant but the desktop shortcut was not created, can this be done manually?

A. Once Voyant Adviser is installed, a desktop shortcut will normally be added to your computer's desktop. If you are using a Windows computer, an additional link to Voyant Adviser will be added to the Start menu, bottom-left on your desktop, under All Programs > Voyant Adviser.

These shortcuts may be rebranded with your firm’s logo, if your firm subscribes to our rebranding service.

Going forward, you will use these shortcuts to launch the software.

However, it may be that the permissions on your computer are set to disallow desktop shortcuts from being created. For example, in many cases remotely hosted desktops (e.g. Citrix environments) are set to prohibit regular users (non-administrators) from adding desktop shortcuts to their virtual desktops. In such a case you would need to contact a member of your company's IT support staff to assist with the permissions needed to allow a desktop shortcut to be created.

Ultimately, if you find it is your company's policy simply not to allow desktop shortcuts, the only option would be to launch Voyant Adviser from our website. See Option 1 below.

There are, however, several different ways to restore the desktop shortcut if it has been deleted. What follows are five different options.

1. Reinstall Voyant Adviser to restore the desktop shortcut

2. Launch Voyant Adviser instead from the Start menu (Windows only)

3. Have Voyant Adviser attempt to restore the shortcut

4. Attempt to restore the shortcut through the Java Control Panel

5. Should all else fail, add a Voyant launch file to your desktop

Before you begin, please note that the following options relate to desktop shortcuts to Voyant Adviser. Its companion software, AdviserGo, is browser based and is launched directly form our website, not via desktop shortcut.

Option 1 - Reinstall Voyant Adviser to restore the desktop shortcut

Visit the Voyant website, sign in and click Voyant Adviser to reinstall the software. Doing so may restore the shortcut to your desktop.

1. Visit the Voyant website and log in. Which website you visit to install the software will depend on which version of Voyant you use.

2. Click "Download Voyant Adviser" to reinstall the software. Reinstalling Voyant Adviser may restore its desktop shortcut, provided desktop shortcuts are being allowed to be created on your computer in the first place.

Note that even without a shortcut, downloading and launching from our website is always an alternative way to launch the software.

Option 2 - Launch Voyant Adviser instead from the Start menu (Windows only)

In addition to the desktop shortcut, Windows computers also have shortcuts to the software installed in the Windows Start menu.

1. To launch the software from the Start menu, go to Start (or the Windows icon) bottom left on your desktop.

2. Either scroll through the alphabetical list of All Applications to find, select and open Voyant.

3. Alternatively, use the menu's search field to find, select and open Voyant. If Voyant does not appear listed as an installed application, it may be that the software needs to be installed or reinstalled (see option 1).

Option 3 - Have Voyant Adviser attempt to restore the shortcut

Voyant Adviser also has a tool for restoring the desktop shortcut to the software, provided that shortcuts are being allowed on your computer.

1. To access this option, you must first launch the software. You may do so from our website (see steps in option 1).

2. With Voyant Adviser open, select and open any client record.

 3. Click the Voyant logo (or if your firm uses our optional rebranding service, your company's logo) top left.

4. Click "View system info".

5. At the bottom of this  dialogue, click the button to "Create Desktop Shortcut".

Note: If you find that even this command fails to create a shortcut, it is almost certain a permissions issue that is preventing the desktop shortcut from being created. For example, in many cases remotely hosted desktops (e.g. Citrix environments) are set to prohibit regular users (non-administrators) from adding desktop shortcuts to the virtual desktops. In such a case, one would need to contact an administrator for further assistance in allowing the desktop shortcut to be created.

Option 4 - Attempt to restore the shortcut through the Java Control Panel

If you are on a Windows computer:

1. Go to your computer's Start menu and in the search field enter "Java" or "Configure Java" and select the Configure Java application.

On older versions of Windows, you may need to go to the Control Panel to open Java. Select on the Start menu Control Panel > Programs > Java.

If you are on a Mac:

1. Click on the Apple logo in the upper left corner of the screen and select System Preferences. Under System Preferences, there is a link to Java.

In either case, the Java Control Panel will open.

2. On the first tab, General, in the Temporary Internet Files section of the panel, select the View button.

This will launch the Java Cache Viewer, which is where the Voyant Adviser software is actually stored (cached) on your computer.

Note: Depending on your computer's processing speeds, this may take a moment to display.

3. In the cache viewer, right-click on the cached Voyant software, which should be shown as cached in Java.

4. Select Install Shortcut

Java will attempt to restore the shortcut.

However, if you find this menu option to be disabled (grayed out), this could indicate that the shortcut is on your computer somewhere (perhaps you are operating in dual screen mode and the shortcut is only viewable on a different monitor ) or that Java is not permitted to add the shortcut  on your computer.

As an option, one could always launch Voyant by double clicking on it in the Java Cache Viewer (pictured above). This works but is admittedly not the most user friendly way to access the software.

Note: If the Voyant Adviser is not shown in the Java Cache Viewer, then the software is no longer cached on your computer, which would explain why there is not desktop shortcut to it. Reinstall the software from our website (see Option 1).

Option 5 - If all else fails, add a Voyant launch file to your desktop

As a final resort, Voyant Adviser has a tool for adding the launch file to your desktop, provided that you are allowed to add anything to your desktop. The steps are similar to option 3 above.

1. To access this option, you must first launch the software. You may do so from our website (see steps in option 1).

2. With Voyant Adviser open, select and open any client record.

3. Click the Voyant logo (or if your firm uses our optional rebranding service, your company's logo) top left.

6. A message should appear confirming that a launch file, LaunchVoyant.bat, has been added to your desktop. Click OK

7. You should find the file (as shown below) on your desktop. This file can be clicked, as an alternative to a traditional desktop shortcut, to launch Voyant Adviser.

Note: If you find that even this command fails to add a launch file to your desktop, it is almost certain a permissions issue that is preventing the desktop shortcut from being created.
