In this video, we will walk you through how to add, delete, and change events in Voyant.
Transcript:
In this video, I’ll be walking you through how to create, move, and delete events on your timeline in Voyant Australia.
For the first example, I’m going to show you how to add new events while creating an item in the plan.
We’re going to start by clicking the plus button in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen, then selecting Income and Other Income.
Let’s say, for example, that Amy is planning to do some freelance work for a few years, bringing in around $35,000 per year in additional income.
When setting up the timing for this income, instead of selecting one of the pre-populated events, we’re going to create our own custom events directly on the timeline.
To do this, go to the timing section and double-click in the grey area of the timeline. We’ll say this income starts in the second year of the plan. We’ll set that as the start event.
Next, let’s say the freelance work ends when Amy reaches age 60. Again, simply double-click in the grey area above the year where you’d like the event to occur.
Now we have Amy starting her freelance work at age 53 and ending it at age 60.
Click Done to save the timing.
Next, I want to walk you through how to delete events from the timeline.
If your client has an event on the timeline that they no longer need, you can hover over the icons on the timeline to see what each one represents.
For example, let’s say Amy has decided she no longer wants to remodel the kitchen.
When you select the event, you’ll notice a blue banner indicating that this event is connected to an item in the plan. In this case, it’s connected to a goal or expense item.
Click Show Details, then open the connected item and delete it.
Once the linked item has been removed, go back to the timeline and open the event again. You’ll now see the trash can icon available, allowing you to delete the event from the plan completely.
So now, the kitchen remodel is no longer part of the timeline.
You can also move items on the timeline very easily.
For example, if Amy decides she wants to continue working until age 65 instead of retiring earlier, simply click and drag the event to the new year on the timeline.
If you need to move it back, just use the same method.
Lastly, I want to show you how to add a standalone event to the timeline.
From anywhere in the plan, click the plus button in the bottom right-hand corner and select Event.
Amy mentions that she’d like to buy a boat someday, but she isn’t sure yet how much it will cost.
We’ll create an event called “Buy a Boat” and place it around age 60 on the timeline.
This creates a marker event on the timeline. You can click on it and see that it isn’t connected to any financial item and doesn’t currently have a monetary value attached to it.
These types of events can be really useful as reminders for future planning conversations with your client.
For example, at your next review meeting, you might revisit this discussion and decide whether it’s time to turn that idea into an actual goal or expense in the plan.
And of course, if the client changes their mind, you can simply delete the event.
I hope this helps.
