Custom Tax Regimes and People - Global

Transcript:

In today’s training, I’m going to walk you through how to build a plan in Voyant Global. I’ll also show you how to create a custom tax regime in the system, both at the subscription level and on a per-client basis.

If you have access to subscription owner or manager features, you’ll see a Configuration option at the top of the screen. This is where you can create tax regimes that can be reused across multiple clients.

Creating a Custom Tax Regime

To begin, go into the Tax Regimes section.

Here, you’ll see all of the tax regimes that have already been created. These are available for both yourself and other users within the subscription to use when creating plans.

To add a new regime, click the plus button in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

First, give the regime a name. In this example, we’re creating a New Zealand Tax Regime.

Next, select the appropriate currency from the dropdown menu. In this case, we’ll choose the New Zealand Dollar.

Now we need to add the tax thresholds required to build the tax brackets. For this example, we’ll create five brackets.

One important thing to note is that the system asks for the lower threshold for each bracket, so make sure you enter the lower threshold values correctly.

New Zealand Tax Brackets

  • Income starting at $0 will be taxed at 10.5%
  • Income starting at $15,601 will be taxed at 17.5%
  • Income starting at $53,501 will be taxed at 30%
  • Income starting at $78,101 will be taxed at 33%
  • Income starting at $180,000 and above will be taxed at 39%

As you enter these thresholds, you’ll see a visual representation displayed in the bar below so you can verify the brackets have been entered correctly.

Capital Gains, Dividends, and Interest

Next, we need to define how capital gains, dividends, and interest are taxed within this jurisdiction.

For this example:

  • Capital Gains will generally be tax-free, so we’ll create a $1 threshold taxed at 0%.
  • Dividends will be taxed at 33%, again starting at anything over $1.
  • Interest will remain taxed as ordinary income.

Threshold Escalation

The Threshold Escalation field allows you to apply future increases to tax brackets over time.

For example, entering 2% would escalate all tax thresholds by 2% each year throughout the plan.

In this example, we’ll leave threshold escalation at 0% so the tax thresholds remain fixed across all years of the plan.

We’ll also leave the filing status as Individual and then click Done to save the regime.

You’ll now see the New Zealand Tax Regime available in your list of saved regimes.

Creating a Client

Now that the regime has been created, we can use it when adding a client.

To create a client, click the plus button in the bottom-right corner and select Create Client.

Enter the client’s information:

  • Client name
  • Birth year
  • Plan start year

You can adjust the plan start year depending on how you prefer to structure your planning, but keep in mind that Voyant works in full planning years.

For example:

  • If the plan starts on January 1st, 2026
  • Then Year 2 begins on January 1st, 2027

Next, define whether the client is already retired. If not, enter their expected retirement age. In this example, we’ll leave retirement set to age 65.

Selecting the Tax Regime

On the next screen, you can either:

  • Select one of the prebuilt tax regimes already available in the system
  • Or create a brand-new tax regime directly for that client

We’ll select the New Zealand Tax Regime we just created.

Once loaded, you’ll see the client is now using:

  • The New Zealand Tax Regime
  • New Zealand Dollars as the plan currency

If you ever need to review or adjust the tax settings later, you can return to the Tax Regimes section within the client.

Adding Family Members

Next, let’s finish building the household.

Go to the plus button in the bottom-right corner. This is where you can add all items into the plan.

We’ll start by adding people.

First, add the client’s spouse, Nora, and enter her birth year.

Using the small dropdown arrow, select Save and Add Another so we can also add their son, Timmy, along with his birth year.

Click Done to save everyone into the plan.

Now that all three people have been added, you can begin linking accounts and planning items to the appropriate individuals.

If you ever need to review or edit the people in the plan, simply open the People section and select the individual you want to update.

I hope this was helpful. If you ever need assistance creating a plan, you can click the client name in the top-right corner of the software, select Request Support, send us a message, and share client access with the support team.
