Creating, Editing, and Deleting Events on the Timeline
This article explains how to create, move, and delete timeline events in Voyant, including:
- Creating custom events while entering plan items
- Removing unused events
- Moving events on the timeline
- Adding standalone timeline markers for future discussions
Creating Custom Events While Adding an Item
You can create custom timeline events directly while adding an item to a plan.
Example: Adding Freelance Income with Custom Timing
- Click the Plus (+) button in the bottom-right corner.
- Select Income → Other Income.
- Enter the income details:
- Example: Amy earns £35,000 per year from freelance work.
Setting Custom Start and End Events
Instead of using the default events:
- Go to the Timing section.
- Double-click in the grey area of the timeline to:
- Set a Start Event in the second year of the plan.
- Set an End Event at age 60.
- In this example:
- Freelance work starts at age 53
- Ends at age 60
Click Done to save.
Viewing and Understanding Timeline Events
- Navigate to the Timeline.
- Hover over any event icon to see what it represents.
- If an event is linked to an item, a blue banner will appear showing:
- How many items are affected
- Which item is connected to the event
Deleting an Event from the Timeline
Events can only be deleted once they are no longer connected to any items.
Example: Removing a Kitchen Remodel Event
- Hover over the event on the timeline.
- Click Show Details to see the connected item.
- Click into the connected item (e.g., a kitchen remodel expense).
- Delete the item.
- Return to the timeline.
- Open the event again — the trash can icon will now appear.
- Click the trash can to delete the event from the plan.
The event is now fully removed.
Moving Events on the Timeline
You can easily reposition events:
- Click and drag the event along the timeline.
- Example:
- If Amy decides to work until age 65 instead of 60, drag the event to the new age.
- You can move it back at any time using the same method.
Adding Standalone Timeline Events
You can also add events that are not connected to any financial items.
Example: Adding a “Buy a Boat” Marker
- Click the Plus (+) button.
- Select Event.
- Name the event (e.g., Buy a Boat).
- Place it on the timeline around age 60.
This type of event:
- Has no monetary value
- Is not connected to any item
- Acts as a discussion prompt for future meetings
You can delete it at any time if it’s no longer needed.
When to Use Standalone Events
Standalone events are helpful for:
- Capturing future ideas or goals
- Reminders for adviser-client discussions
- Marking life events that may impact future planning
