How to Remove a Spouse from a Voyant Plan
In this video, we walk through how to remove a spouse from a Voyant plan. This may be required due to divorce, separation, or death. Because people in a plan are often linked to multiple items, it’s important to remove those links before deleting the individual.
This guide shows the safest and most effective way to do that.
Step 1: Review Items Linked to the Spouse
- Open the plan
- Select the spouse you intend to remove (e.g., Janice)
- Click Show Details
You’ll see a list of all items the person:
- Owns
- Co-owns
- Is linked to (goals, income, assets, pensions, events)
⚠️ A person cannot be deleted until all linked items are removed or reassigned.
Step 2: Remove the Spouse from Goals
- Open the Retirement Goal
- Remove the spouse from ownership
- Go to the Timing section
- Ensure timing is not tied to the spouse’s events
- Change the end event from the spouse’s mortality to Plan End
- Change the start event to Plan Start or the remaining spouse’s retirement event (if applicable)
- Click Done
This prevents the plan from relying on events that will be deleted later.
Step 3: Review Remaining Linked Items
Return to the spouse’s profile and confirm the item count has reduced.
Step 4: Remove Income Linked to the Spouse
- Open Income
- Delete or remove the spouse’s income from the plan
- Save changes
Step 5: Remove the Spouse from Savings & Investments
- Open Savings and Investments
- Locate any jointly owned or individually owned accounts
- Remove the spouse from ownership
- If the account should remain, reassign ownership to the remaining spouse
- Review Timing
- Ensure no timing references the spouse’s events
- Click Done
Step 6: Remove the Spouse’s Pension(s)
- Open Pensions
- Delete the spouse’s pension(s) from the plan
or - If the pension remains relevant, change ownership to the remaining spouse
- Save changes
Step 7: Delete the Spouse from the Plan
Once the spouse is no longer linked to any items:
- Select the spouse
- Click Delete from Plan
- Confirm deletion
Step 8: Verify Timeline Cleanup
Go to the Timeline and confirm:
- The spouse’s retirement event has been removed
- The spouse’s mortality event has been removed
- No remaining items reference the deleted person
Key Best Practices
- Always remove ownership and timing dependencies first
- Reassign items when appropriate instead of deleting them
- Confirm the timeline is clean before continuing planning
- Consider creating a What-If plan if modeling post-divorce or survivor scenarios
