FAQ: Why did my Monte Carlo simulation stop before completing all iterations?

Monte Carlo simulations can require significant processing time, particularly when running a large number of iterations or when the client’s plan is complex.

To prevent a simulation from running indefinitely, Voyant's Monte Carlo calculation has a 15-minute processing limit. If the simulation approaches this limit, the calculation will stop and display the results from the iterations that were successfully completed up to that point.

This can sometimes appear as though the simulation stopped unexpectedly, but it does not necessarily indicate that the software has crashed.

What affects how long a Monte Carlo simulation takes?

The amount of time required depends largely on the complexity of the client’s plan. Plans containing more assets, income sources, expenses, goals, tax calculations, and other modelling elements may require more processing time for each iteration.

The number of iterations selected also has a significant impact. For example, running 1,000 iterations can take considerable time, particularly for a complex plan, and the simulation may reach the processing limit before all 1,000 iterations are completed.

What should I do if the simulation does not complete?

If the Monte Carlo simulation is reaching the processing limit, try reducing the number of iterations and running the simulation again.

A lower number of iterations will generally complete more quickly while still providing a useful illustration of the potential range of outcomes for the client's plan.
